Part of NYC Parks’ Anchor Parks initiative, this project revitalizes the largest park in the South Bronx, expanding access to nature, recreation, outdoor fitness, and social space in one of New York’s most underserved communities. Challenged by economic hardship and poor health outcomes, the neighborhood had long been cut off from its historic park by security concerns and hilly topography that was unnavigable by the community’s seniors. To meet these challenges, Starr Whitehouse developed a new master plan and led initial phases of reconstruction. New plazas, playgrounds, ballfields and a dog run activate the park perimeter around the clock. The distinctive promenade is revitalized as a social spine, the centerpiece of an ADA-accessible path network that opens the rugged interior to seniors. An amphitheater supports impromptu and planned performances, while enhanced horticulture celebrates native ecology within the park’s maintenance protocols. These interventions create a new identity for the park, and above all, a welcoming environment for community members of all ages to reaffirm social ties.
