Starr Whitehouse is leading the DRI-funded reconstruction of Hudson’s historic Promenade Hill Park. Engaging the community in socially-distanced workshops, our team developed strategies to make the promenade universally accessible, while carving out new programming and social spaces in one of the nation’s oldest public parks. Gently-sloped paths sweep along the park’s southern boundary, opening up the promenade to wheelchair access while avoiding critical root zones of existing trees. Set within the “oxbow” of these paths, expanded lawn areas add space for picnicking and gathering. A range of new programming clustered around the redesigned plaza expands activities in the park, including added tables for picnicking, stone slab seating, and a whale-themed spray shower for local children to play in on hot summer days. Starr Whitehouse is currently guiding the new design through construction.
