Starr Whitehouse has been engaged by the Durst Organization to design an esplanade and amenity terraces for a new mixed-use development on the Astoria shoreline. The rugged design creates a 2.5-acre open space that connects the towers to each other and opens the waterfront to the public. At the center of the site, the main entrance leads from 1st Street to a Great Lawn framed by stunning views of Manhattan and the East River. A nearby playground offers a place for resident and neighborhood children to play. At both the northern and southern ends of the site, the esplanade connects to public land, establishing continuous circulation and creating an accessible public shore for residents and the broader community. Currently in construction.
