The North Bay Connector Project will transform a former landfill into a new nature trail directly connecting downtown Hudson to the Greenport Conservation Area just north of town. Starr Whitehouse was retained by Columbia County to develop design and construction documents for the first phase in the landfill’s reclamation, proceeding from priorities set by the community in a public design workshop and series of stakeholder meetings. The new trail will alternate between capitalizing on dramatic views of the Hudson River from the top of the capped mounds, and taking hikers down to the water to enjoy the sights and sounds of North Bay’s native wetland ecology. Challenges include working on top of capped landfill within and adjacent to regulated wetlands and collaborating with a diverse team of the Columbia County Planning department, the City of Hudson, and the Columbia County Land Conservancy.
